Our Grounds - Lush Living

In 1852, the Sexton family left Ohio for California, and upon reaching their destination, established extensive plant nurseries. On the Goleta property, Joseph Sexton built one of California's widely acclaimed pioneer nurseries. He introduced countless plant species to the area and provided many of the trees and ornamentals that enriched the beautiful gardens for which Santa Barbara has come to be celebrated.

Today, our hotel near Isla Vista is a proud home to Heritage trees, Australian bunya, one of California’s oldest Bird of Paradise plants, Chilean wine palms, Redwoods, cork oak, a Sexton Flame tree, and more.

The Sexton House

A Piece of Santa Barbara History

One of the most unique features of our Santa Barbara hotel is our shared residence with the historic Sexton House. When the Sexton family grew, so did their need for space. In 1880, Joseph and Lucy commissioned Peter Barber, Santa Barbara's premier architect, to design the striking Italianate house, which now serves as the centerpiece of Pacifica Suites. The home became a Goleta showplace with specimen plantings, a rose hedge that stretched a half-mile, flower fields, and youthful activity, which can still be explored today.
